DARPA Grand Challenge

DARPA is sponsoring an autonomous ground vehicle race in 2004 from L.A. to Vegas [via Paul Snively].

It's like The Cannonball Run, only with robots. And no Jackie Chan. But I hear Burt Reynolds is on board.
