Shocking

Sometimes things go on and on and you have some idea that they can't really continue forever but it's an idea that remains intellectuallized and in the background of your mind until it's forced into your guts by, say, a sudden, deep round of layoffs. It must be really strange to work someplace for a few years, coming in day after day, then come in to work one morning and, completely unexpectedly, someone tells you that you aren't going to be coming in to work there anymore and that you can go home right now, actually.

It's like, shit. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Anway, I've still got my job, it's just some friends who lost theirs.

I'm just wondering about the reasons of such decisions. Can you unveil some background on this?
Of course not revealing their personal infos or you can even `anonymize' the story.

Maybe it's time to search for clients instead of employer?

This week, for the first time in my life, I had to be on the other side of this story. I can say it feels like shit. Our decision was based on pure technical reasons, but it doesn't make it any easier.

It is very strange.

Of course, I understand why it had to happen. I hear fiscal discipline and revenue are vital to startup companies.

Ok, so it's fine now. Another guy where I just got hired on, NXTV, was out of work for a week and a half. I was out for three weeks. I took an initial cut in pay equal to the severance I haven't yet used. I now drive to work through Topanga Canyon instead of 10/110, but it is the same time. But I go past the ocean and through a canyon road instead. Just like Team America: Fuck yeah! I'd celebrate tonight, but instead I'll wait until tomorrow night.

Happy birthday John.

And here I am again starting a new job tomorrow. I find it interesting that on the day I turn 30, I also begin working for a company funded in large part by In-Q-Tel. I also enjoy that they are composed of leadership who were once researchers and professors from the USC/ISI department, and still work closely with that deparment, which includes a graduate student whose position I had taken at ER. It's also nice that now I get to ride my bike to Marina del Rey for work.
