Taste for the Web

Xach Beane's new essay on Google Maps:

Google Maps is essentially a large JavaScript application. Great hackers have an almost instinctual aversion to JavaScript. Google is betting its future on something a tasteful programmer's radar rejects.

"Bet7ing its future" seems a bit much. They're expanding in quite a few directions right now, with a possible web browswer, Picasa, etc. Interesting idea though.

That's the best spoof of clueless Lisp advocacy I've ever seen. The profound ignorance about every non-Lisp technical topic, the irrelevant references to random facts about biology, and the incoherent deification of one's own preferences as objectively correct are just superb.

In fact, it was such a good spoof that I wasn't sure it was a spoof until I read the footnotes. I'm sure poor Xach will get a lot of flames from people who thought he was serious.

Oh, and in the "Xach Beane spoofs clueless Lisp advocates" category, there's also http://www.xach.com/lisp/lisp-blog.txt

It's specifically a Paul graham parody (and a brilliantly funny one too) - though I admit that even with the visual page style clues I didn't catch on until he mentioned Arc.

I almost didn't get it as a parody, mainly cause the javascript knocks in the middle nearly trolled me into an insensate rage, lucky I saw the curly brace stuff just in time before i murdered my computer.

Very funny stuff, especially if you've read the originals. Over in the java world I spotted this some time ago:

wow, that jroller one is pretty offensive, sounds like the guy probably writes a political blog calling for the execution of opponents on the side.

Apologies - I suffered poster's regret almost immediately. I actually like Mr. Graham's two lisp books so I can't say I agree with all the venom directed at him there. It's so outrageous though that it made me laugh. Most of the bile on the bileblog appears reserved for java numbskulls.
