ER1 For Sale

Yesterday Evolution officially announced ER1's arrival in retail outlets.

ER1 stands erect and scans the plains for predators

One interesting thing about ER1 is that it went from prototype to sitting on CompUSA shelves in about four months.

Robots.net has a blurb.

Congratulations to Evolution Robotics, it looks cool.

One nit in the press release though: "Evolution Robotics has developed the Evolution Robotics Software Platform™, a proprietary, open, modular, portable, hardware-independent and scalable software architecture."

Huh? "proprietary, open"? Somebody get the PR folks a dictionary, please.

Yeah, that is a really silly way to word that. And if anyone cares, the definition of "open" being used is here (heh):

In summary, the API is public, the implementation is not. "Open" seems like at the least a confusing word to describe that, unless there's some additional explanation.

I recall IBM used the word "open" in a similar sense (e.g. "open systems") long before "Open Source" took off.
These days, of course, it sounds a bit old-fashioned.

OK, that makes sense.
