how do i get rid of my lisp?

Posted by: Nathan on January 22, 2006 09:49 PM

i recently had a flu viral infection. lasted 5 days. after which i found that i had aqquired a lisp in my speech. i just had extensive medical studies done; cat scan, MRI, x-rays,neck ultra sound. a speech pathologist found no organic causes. i converse verbally for my living, and i am most distressed about this problem. anyone heard of this happening so suddenly before?

I have a lisp that I've had since I was a kid. It only became a problem when I took a carrer in acting. I have worked on it and it has vastly improved but I've got to a stage where I feel that I cannot improve it anymore. People have said it has almost gone, but when I get a phone call from a last casting saying that they would of offered me a major role if it weren't for the lisp I have to think it all out again. It is mainly dominate when I am singing for musical auditions some reason? Does anyone have suggestions how I can improve this so that it's hopefully no longer there for my acting work. Just to let you know that I cut the cord under my tongue to free it more to point for articulation. A singing teacher feels maybe my tongue is too wide?

Any help would be beneficial!

I hate my lisp... Especially with the "S" in the middle of my name, it makes it difficult to say without a pause. And talking on the phone--- forget about it! I heard you can cut the tip of your rongue off to get rid of it... Actually, that's how I came upon this.. I was looking up to procedure on ask.com. Good luck!

I have had a lisp since I was very young. I've gone to many different classes and doctors to try to get rid of it, but nothing seems to work. Are there some lisps that just never go away, or is mine just different, or am I just not trying hard enough? Please any help or comments would be greatly liked.

I had braces on my teeth for 2 and a half years and after it i had to have a retainer. I kept it on for about 2 years and I had to take it out when i got my misdome teeth out and that is when i found out it was as bad as it was. I believe one of the main reasons people might have a lisp with because of the shape and strucher of there teeth. I am a musician and I love to sing but sometimes the Lisp gets in my way and gets me very angry. I have no idea but i think doing toung twisters might help? Try Red leather, Yellow Leather. and just through out the day say that and try and go faster and maybe it will help.

I have had a lisp since I can remember.
I took speech lesson all the way up to
Middle School and it seems everybody
in my speech class fixed their lisp but now
5 years later I am in 10th grade and
still have one. It really lowers my confedence and I can't be myself around people. I always think about what I am going to
say and if it has a "S" or "R" in it I try to
change the word. Or just avoid the situtation.
This keeps me from alot of things. I hate having to read in class and when writing a paper I try to avoid useing words with a "s" in them which is nearly impossible. Is there anything that can help me get rid of this burden? It's honestly something I think about EVERYDAY.I just want it GONE!

Posted by: Heather on January 16, 2007 07:27 PM

I've been places to help, but they dont. Anything i can do. Please? people dont understand how hard it is.

I think I have a slight lisp because when ever I say something that has the letter s i use one of my teeth for the sound and too much air goes therough the small hole and it is like a whistle sound that sounds like th. I get teased about it too, i have had people come up to me and say "Say silly sally" just to hear me lisp and then they say "oh thats cute"./ It is really annoying. I am in year 9 and i have only just become aware of it. IF there is anything i can do aobut it any help would be greatly appreciated. bomber@ncable.net.au

I have a lisp, and it didnt bother me until i got older, i sound like a baby! Im starting to talk better now, i watch people's mouths when they speak, i can now say many l words. My singing teacher said i have a strong singing voice for my age, but once i recorded myself, and i can hear me saying some words wrong, it gets me so down and mad, i cry at night sometimes. Once i got laughed at by the whole class because of my teacher who made me say words i cant say in front of the whole class, when i was younger it didnt bother me, i would shout out in class and everything, i was really quite popular, but now i just try not to talk to anyone... I want to be a singer, is there any operations you can have to get rid of it??!! Please help me, i hate it so much... Please... Help Me :(

P.S Did you know Jessica Alba has a lisp?! And she sounds fine!... :(

I would love to be able to fix my lisp... Without a therapist too, for the most part. I don't really let it prevent me from speaking in class or anything but it does bug me. It makes me feel inadequate and I hate that I feel that way because of something so seemingly simple. It doesn't help that my name begins with an 'S' either...

Posted by: Sarah on August 30, 2007 05:10 PM

iv had one all my life n its just the way i talk so im not that bothered any more!! im now 15 n would like to get rid of it cuz it prevents me from talking 2 lads!

I know what ya mean, i want to talk to boys, i feel so down when i see all these cool girls on tv and at school talking to the lads, it puts me so down.. i also luv the movie high school musical and high school musical 2, but i always feel so sad afterwards because they can sing and act which is what i want to do.. but i cant bc of my lisp.. it wrecks my life :( I just want to be.. normal :( I cant understand why we actully have them anyway.. :(

Posted by: Jess on September 8, 2007 10:23 AM

i dont know why you all hate it. i actualy find my lisp kinda funny. sure, people point it out (all the time) but a lot of my friends who are girls think its cute =D. its weird, i dont have much of a problem with Z sounds, but i have problems with X, C, and on some occasions F, hehe. and i was born with it. i did have the unfortunate encounter of the band uniform lady, who pointed it out and told me to talk with my teeth shut to fix it. i was about to clock her one, but that would have been bad, and i would have been suspended, and kicked out of orchestra to boot. but, on a good note, when i was in middle school like two years ago the chorus teacher actually asked me to join, hehe, it made be feel really good.
im darn proud i have a lisp! and you all should be too!

Im a male turning 20, i have a lisp and even a stutter and even when i speak fine i seem to mumble really fast that no one knows what ive even said.

its the worst thing growing up with kids pointing fun at the way i talk. i went to a speech therapist for a short few weeks and ended up with much help to reduce my lisp. but even now i cant still ask a mate for some 'crisps' without sounding funny.

im sick of hearing everyone with lisps speaking as though their lives are ruined. its just confidence, all my work mates and uni friends are all fine with it as im sure that people with lisps are still normal.

even with a lisp and a rare stutter i still manage to live a normal life where i have a job, go uni, and have a girlfriend.

i'm 26 years old and have been to many therapist and spent thousands on therapy that haven't changed a thing....it may be because i didn't start until i was in college but i did it all through college...when i was younger i went to a couple of therapist for a while but it got too expensive for my parents...i understand that they couldn't affort it privately but they have no idea what it did to me...i didn't talk to people for a very long time...before i started refusing to read outloud in school, i dreaded it..it became my nightmare...
as a kid, i was often called retarded even though i was in advance classes and have a high IQ, that doesn't matter...america is a place where looks and perception are very important...seek help asap..don't wait...it will ruin your life.... there are people out there who don't care and i'm grateful for my friends but i know that i will continue to lead a very lonely life....the only advice i can give you is to be pretty as a compensation and get help at any cost....

I used to have a lisp, along with many other speech impedments. I couldn't say ANYTHING. Do you have any idea what it's like to listen to this every day:

"Hey Meags, how's it going? Wait! Don't ansther (that's supposed to be how I say "answer"), you can't even talk. Maybe you should just do usth ("us") all a favor and die?"

Yes, that's right, people actually threatened to kill me. But then I met this really wonderful speech therapist who helped me get rid of my speech problems, and after a year, my voice was unbelievably better.

Well, now I have braces, and I just had a couple teeth pulled out to make room for my teeth to straighten. Well, guess what? My lisp is BACK. Is there anyone out there with braces can help me? I just got my teeth pulled yesterday, so maybe this is just a temporary thing?

"it's your personality. without that lisp, u wouldn't be you." that really touched my heart. If u want to go pay all that money to get it fixed, fine. But u will always have it as part of u.!

I am twenty six years old, and I have had a speech defect (lisp) all my life. It takes lots of practice in the mirror, but if you smile while pronouncing s's, your speech impediment will be less or hardly noticiable. I hope that this helps!
