On Lisp On Line

Paul Graham's On Lisp, always in high demand and yet tragically out of print for some time, is now online.

Not that I need it, since I have the real thing. Suckers.

Hm. That there is a fine chair.

Can anyone help me PLEASE? Im 15 and well aware of my strong lisp. Im such an outgoing and crazy person, and I LOVE to talk, i could forever. But lately I've been very self-conscious about my lisp. My friends are pretty good about it, they dont make fun of me...to my face anyway. But I know other people do. It kills me that I have to live with this. I want it gone. I need it gone. I can't live my life like this anymore. Seriously. I NEED HELP. ITS BEEN TOO LONG, NOW IT NEEDS TO GO AWAY

I'm "friends" with one of my teachers at school. That sounds weird, but shes cool. Apparently she claims she had a speech impediment when she was in high school, but she didnt specify a lisp. She doesnt anymore. I wanna ask her about it, but I'm too afraid. Well, im not so much afraid to talk to her, I just feel it would be embarrasing talking to someone about my problem. WHat should I do?

Posted by: star on September 27, 2004 05:40 PM

Hey, I have had a lisp for as long as i can remember, and while i was in school i used to take speech classes and stuff, i'm not sure how helpful they are in general but it definately teaches you techniques to help. One thing I learned is that you sorta smile when you say your s's and z's and it almost forces your tongue to stay back and behind your teeth and practicing in front of a mirror helps too. Eventually, you won't have to smile to do it consciously, it's not doing it unconsciously that's difficult but at least it's a start. The only drawback is developing an "S" sound that sounds more like an sh sound but if you practice in front of the mirror or with a friend, you'll recognize when you're doing it and it won't be a problem. I know most of you guys are in your early teens and that can suck, i never was really made fun of for my lisp but i know how annoying it can get when you're trying to get something important across and you can't stop thinking about how dumb you sound, the truth is, is that the criticism in your own head is 100 times worse than anyone could ever criticize you externally. Just keep practicing on your own, and if that doesn't work, most schools employ a speech therapist and if yours doesn't a local college or university will definately have speech students or faculty that can give you some pointers. Hope this helps you guys, and good luck!

Help!!! I am a huge fan of your show "Overhaulin'". My husband has a 67 Chevy Impala 427 that needs some TLC. His friends tease him all the time, wondering if he will ever drive it again. And one buddy asks him often, "Why don't you sell the Chevy to me?" And although my husband laughs it off, I, myself, am tempted to tell him "Yes, please take it and enjoy!" Can you help us keep that classic AND enjoy it at the same time? Sincerely, Donna

whoever posted that message on the 29th of sept. thanks! that seems to help i'll try it. if you have any other suggestions for me, id really appreciate them. like everyone else, its not only being sick of comments, its just the fact that im a very talkative person, but like you said, all i can think about when i talk is how dumb is sound

Hi I'm 18 and have been living with this problem for 16 years now. I finally decided the only thing that would work for me was completely avoiding any words with the letter 's' or 'S' in them. I haven't used an s-word now in over 12 years. It's not too hard; after awhile it becomes second nature. There are still some things that give me problems from time to time, though, for example, plurals. And don't even ask me about how I deal plurals that really refer to only 1 thing, like 'a pair of glasses'. If anyone has an ideas, let me know. By the way and strangely enough, I don't have the same problem when I write and it's like a major relief when I get a chance to do it (yeah, I get to use an 's'!!!), so thanks for giving me the opportunity.

hi im 14 and i hate my lisp help me get rid of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: on October 16, 2004 09:24 AM

hello my name is Mark and i have had a speech problem my whole life. People are always making fun of me at school because i sound like a girl. I am 18 and i am a very grown man but if im talking on the phone, people always say "ok Mam" or "Miss" or if I am talking to a girl on the phone she might like me but when she really starts to hear my voice she gets turned off. I am always mistaken for a female and i went to speech classes for 6 years!!! and it did not help. I need help and i even went back to speech classes but they did not help. Is their any possible way i could get surgery? Money is not a problem in my house but my teacher told me she had a lisp and she got some surgery that helped her. PLEASE help me i need to feel good about my self!!!

Posted by: Mark on October 16, 2004 10:07 PM

hmm...wow susan how could u possibly avoid 's' words? what if im called on to read in school and theres something i dont wanna read? it always gets me nervous. i have somewhat a large vocabulary and like showing off all these big words i know, but most of them, OF COURSE, have s sounds in them. so i cant. btw mark, susan olsen(cindy brady from the brady bunch) used to have a lisp as you can tell and during an interview they said she had surgery to correct it. now its gone. the problem is, my parents would spring for it. and theyd think it was ridiculous that i ever mentioned it

Posted by: michelle on October 17, 2004 01:49 PM

hey i just wanted to say even though i have to suffer with my lisp, it nice to know i have all you people with the same problem i can easily relate to. so thanks:) and susan, what does it mean to say a 2nd nature?

Posted by: on October 17, 2004 01:54 PM

OK OK, feeling very self-concious right now. i feel as if this is my journal. sorry. why does anyone have to suffer speech impediments? its wrong. they should all be corrected immediatly. surgerys outta the question. i really think it be good to have one, but too embarrased to ask. dont think we could afford it anyway. speech classes are out. besides my schools too cheap to have one anyway. how can it help? i dont mean to sound mean or rude, but how can people just waltz into speech classes? dont you feel ridiculed or embarrased to even be there asking for help with the impediment in front of people. even if my school did have a speech class, i would not take it. My biggest fear is college. i plan on being a doctor. how am i gonna be able to communicate with people? HELP! Im crying im so scared. How am i gonna achieve my dream worried about this? what if i have to say "psoriasis(spelling lol) or 'arthritis' or 'see your pharmacist' ????omg totally freaking out...thanks for reading

Posted by: michelle on October 17, 2004 02:02 PM

i used to cut myself. everytime i had a bad encounter w/ someone involving my lisp. i cut. i still feel the need to. cant play soccer though with open arms, someone will see and ill be in big trouble. so i stopped. im also suicidle. i feel like i have no purpose on earth. it sounds dumb, but if i cant do anything with my life cause of the way of talk, i ask, why live at all? whats the point. does anyone here seriously understand the pain im in? sorry for going into such depth, it was probably more than you needed to know. but im pouring my feelings out here. I HATE LISPS.

Posted by: on October 17, 2004 02:07 PM

2nd nature means 'just don't do it' - don't use any s-words at all. Try it for an hour then a day then forever - your brain will adjust and pretty soon you won't even think about it, and other people don't even notice. Of course, sometimes you can't avoid it, like when someone asks your full name - usually this happens when you're dealing with someone you don't know who needs to know your name for instance to fill out a form, but in those cases, just swallow your pride and forget about it - you'll never talk to them again (and they don't really care anyway if you have a lisp). Also, in my case I use my middle name instead of my first name, so I always introduce myself as 'Laura' and that's what all my friends call me, or get a nickname.

If you don't think it's possible, look up the word 'lipogram' in the dictionary or google for it online. Here are some true examples:

Bearing an obsessive dislike for the letter R, Gottlob Burmann not only only wrote 130 poems without using that letter, but he also omitted the
letter R from his daily conversation for 17 years. This practice meant the eccentric 18th-century German poet never said his own name.

Tying down the E on his typewriter to make sure one didn't slip in, Ernest Vincent Wright, a graduate om M.I.T., wrote a credible 50110-word novel, Gadsby, totally excluding the most frequently used letter in the English language. ... Wright, a 67 year old Californian, undertook his E-less novel to prove such a feat could be done. He wrote the book in 165 days. He employed no tricks, such as coining words or substituting apostrophes for Es. His greatest difficulty, he stated, was in avoiding the use of verbs ending with ED, being forced to use SAID for REPLIED or ASKED. and in avoiding all pronouns such as HE, SHE or THEY.

There are a lot of other examples, just google and find out.

Also, does anyone know if people in France have the same problem as us English speakers - in French, 's' at the end of words for plurals, etc are silent?

Posted by: Susan on October 18, 2004 10:37 AM

thanks for that info laura, i appreciate it. so all i do is just practice talking while trying to avoid most 's' words? thanks:)

I have gotten the part of the Cowardly Lion and my lisp is effecting my singing and if this continues any longer I doubt I will have enough self-esteem to crawl up on stage and talk at all, which really sucks because I love the part and the play so if anyone has any ideas on getting rid of my lisp by doing exercises than I would really appreciate the help! Hello... I am almost 15 and i have a bad lisp. While others may not find it bad, I would say it was very bad according to the amount of feedback i get every time i talk. I get very embarressed and nervous every time i have to talk in front of large amounts of people. I thank God every day that i have amazing friends who don't judge me for it and understand how i feel. I really don't want to have to live with it anymore though. Its been taking control of my life for 4 years now. Someone posted a man's e-mail address a few monthes ago having to do with lisps and surgery and I may e-mail him. But if anyone heres about any more things to do for this I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you so much!

Hey My Name Is Mike And I Am A Song Writer/ Hip-Hopper, And I Am Getting Made Fun Of Cuz Of My Lispe...Most People Dont Say Nething, But When The Few Who Do Say Stuff It Really Really Bothers Me, I Just Want Some Techniques To Fixing This.

Posted by: Mike on February 3, 2005 01:19 PM

Hey, I am 18 and have had a bad lisp all my life. I have a very small gap in my front teeth that I think may be affecting the way I talk. Also I have an overbite and when I pronounce the "s" sound I have a big under bite and my jaw sticks out. It really bothers me because the top of my right jaw hurts and also cracks (due to excess cartilage) when I try and talk any other way. I have also too been thinking about surgery but I don't think my parents would agree. When I rarely mention it to them I get embarrassed because they tell me it's cute even though I've heard how much of a turn off it is to guys behind my back. I am too very self conscious when I talk to people, and I'd like to be more sociable but it holds me back. I am going to college this year and would really like some help. Friends have tried helping me out and it doesn't work so I don't see how a speech class would, and I also feel dumb going to one now at the age of 18. What if I'm in a room with a bunch of little kids? If you have any suggestions please help me, because I think it brings my self-esteem down very low at times. I have also been thinking of becoming a translator because I like speaking different languages and my lisp also interferes with my pronunciation.

Ok, I understand that it is hard to be able to communicate when you talk different than the majority of people you are around. I know because i have a lisp too and im 19. My advice to all you young kids who are struggling to fit in and who hate being made fun of is to realize. These people are making fun of you because you talk different. Thats all, who are they to say that just because you dont talk like them that your goofey or wrong. They are wrong and straight up put those kids in their place when they try to make fun of you as you get older people mature and stop caring how you talk. They care more about who you are.

Speech impediments are horrible, embarrasing, evil tools of humiliation to those who see it as a weakness that you have. This website doesn't actually concern lisps as speech impediments. LISP is a computer programming language that is actually responsible for the spawning of many other computer programming languages. To quote another website concerning the topic of LISP as a computer language, "In 1960, John McCarthy published a remarkable paper in which he did for programming something like what Euclid did for geometry. He showed how, given a handful of simple operators and a notation for functions, you can build a whole programming language. He called this language Lisp, for "List Processing," because one of his key ideas was to use a simple data structure called a list for both code and data."

If you are interested in LISP the computer programming language you may finish reading the page from which I just quoted.

If you are not interested in LISP and are actually interested in lisps (the speech impediment) please use a popular search engine to find a different website with speech impediments as a topic.

Some popular search engines:
http://www.dogpile.com
http://www.google.com
http://www.yahoo.com
http://www.askjeeves.com

By the way, if someone makes it a point to embarrass you because of a speech impediment, consider learning the computer programming language we call LISP to eventually attain so much skill and ability that you are worth a great deal of money, then leverage your value to start your own business and become so successful that you have amassed an even greater and unspeakable amount of money so that you might lobby your respective country's politicians to create and pass obscure legislation that practically gurantees the doom and misfortune of the specific people who taunted you all along. An alternative means to this end may include any combination of a woodchipper, a chainsaw, 10,000lbs(pound) anvil(Acme brand), dangerous out-of-state illegal fireworks and pyrotechnics, or trained seahorse assasins. I am not responsible for anything I said nor anything you thought or did as a result of what I said or thought or didn't say or didn't think. I am in no way responsible for anything anywhere and this sentence is not to be construed as a disclaimer if infact it is not. May contain MSG.

Hey.
I'm 13 years old and I first started to lisp when my adult teeth started to grow through.

I've tried everything to get rid of my lisp. I've been to countless speech therapists. I'm so happy I found this website, because before it felt like I was the only one.

People tease me about my lisp, so much that I've cut myself countless times over it (once so bad that I was taken to hospital). My friends aren't bothered, and try to stick up for me and tell me it isn't noticable. It may not be to them, but it is to me.
I hate it. I mumble over 's' words, and people keep asking me to repeat myself. I don't answer questions in class or like to read aloud because I'm so embarrassed.
I didn't notice it till people started picking on me. I'm fed up with it.

And i have a lisp i practice. Im cool at my shool and when people make fun my lisp i just act gay and make them laugh as a joke, or say i dont care. Or just talk to ur docter to see wuts wrong with ur teeth.

Fisrty, I am Appaled at the lack of Information on the internet about 'Lisps' I have one and Today is the first time I have searched the internet about it. This is the only site I could find.
People, Lisp's don't make you any less of a person. Its part of who you are, and personally I wouldn't change it for the world.
Stop stressing about it. Get used to it.

hey guys! I'm 13 and I never knew I had a lisp or anyone else i KNEW. it happened on the day of the superbowl..a kid said say sara and I said it and he said u have a lisp. I confronted my friends and they said no you don't. Then I met another kid and he kept saying thara (thara-sara) and soon got a bunch of these guys saying it! Its horriable and my friends keep saying its not big and they can't hear it! I don't know what to do.. I mean i went to a carnival last night and all the boys who make fun of me were there and they kept saying thara brown and one of them was being really annoying! It didn't really bother me though, but it was annoying so I took my water and poured it down the kids back. They were all surprised I did it. It made me feel better cause i stood up for myself. They stoped annoying me ..well a little, but whenever they did I'd have something better to shoot back at them. But it doesn't mean I dont want to get rid of it.. and i don't want to pay for someone to help me cuz its not that bad..so i just want to proove all those people wrong! any suggestions!?

i am almost 13 and i have a lisp(sort of). it really isn't a lisp, but i make a whistling sound when i say my S's(and everybody who's heard me says it can get VERY annoying) is there a name for this? i really want to find out if i can correct it. i have even tried changing my name, from Solin to Lin, but everybody says it looks japanese. i guess now i'll try changing it to Petra(my middle name) *sigh*

Hey everybody. I'm 17 and like most of you I have a lisp, though it is mostly on just my /z/s rather than on both my /s/s and /z/s. my /s/s only sound like /th/ from time to time or in certain words but my /z/s always sound like a cross between /s/ and /th/. but for the most part, people don't really notice my lisp and if they do, they don't mention it. My lisp used to be much worse though. I've had one as long as I can remember. When I was really young (like 7 or 8) I started to notice it and I didn't mind it. I actually kind of thought that it was cool because nobody else sounded like me. But then, in middle school, i had to start going to speech tharepy to correct my speech and it kind of brought my self-asteem down. then I started getting made fun of and laughed at. that really made me feel bad. in the summer between my 8th and 9th grade year (when i was 14), i started to get my /s/s right. what I had been doing wrong was that I was placing my tounge against my top front teeth. I started placing it by my bottom teeth and I started sounding much better. i'm still not perfect but people always understand me and i don't get made fun of, so I would say that i'm living a much better life. hope this helps someone.

Hey I would like to comment about that last one Marcus. I am having the same problem. I have a little gap in my 2 front teeth and when i try and say the "s" sound it really comes out slurred. When I block it with my fingers the one inbetween my two front teeth and the sides of the two front teeth. When I do it, the "s" sound comes out really clear and normal. I've never had this problem until recently. I am 22 and I had braces when I was younger but I had my wisdom teeth come in about 3 years ago and they came in pointing toward the other teeth so it kind of buckled them again. I seriously think some of these lisps or speech impediments can be cured if someone gets the right dentistry work done to their teeth. I know if I had my gap filled I would talk normal again. I rarely ever say anything that has an "s" in it anymore because I am very conscious about it now. Just to encourage you guys get to your dentist while you're young and get your teeth fixed. It will save you a lot of problems in the future. God bless

Most people's lisp can be FIXED. Though they can be fixed in different ways depending on what type of lisp you have. For all you people who know you have a lisp because of dental problems, all you have to do is get your dentist to use a filling (sorta like artificial teeth), to cover gaps or whateva between ur teeth. You can get this done at any age.

For everyone else who lisp because they are used to it, all you have to do is go to a speech pathologist, and eventually your lisp will be reduced and probably disappear as you get used to talking the new way.

Go to this site for info about lisping and how to treat it:

Good luck ppl.

good luck

hi, im an 18yr old girl, and i have a bad lisp. according to my parents i was born practically deaf, or at least not responding to noise, and although now i can hear ok, im only slightly deaf in one ear, i have a lisp and i think it is probably down to this. i really have had enough of having one, and it governs everything i do in life, like what college i go to (picking one without any s/s etc in), what jobs i might do, the courses i pick at college, because i dont want people who ask me about these things to know i have one.
i, too, like susan/laura have avoided saying any words with the letters s and z etc in for years, but every day i go through the same trauma of fretting that someone will ask me something or i will need something that requires me say a word that i lisp in. i just want to be free, i feel so trapped! i work as a waitress, and this is so difficult, because i've worked there for over 2 years and no-one i work with knows i have a lisp because i avoid the words, play dumb or just kinda hide from customers. to susan/laura - what job do you have? coz i really need a job which means i dont have to talk to people.
i just hate the fact that when im not speaking lisping words i know that people like me, but i know that if i do, such as by accident, they wont. it really hurts because i hear them take the piss out of people with lisps, and they involve me because i "dont" have one... that they know of anyway. i know these people arent real friends if they wont like me for this, but i dont want to risk it... it hurts so much to know that if i didnt have a lisp there wouldnt be a problem, and i know theyd definately like me, and that i could have any job i wanted, or go to any college or place that i wanted.
but i cant
ARGH!!!!!!! its so frustrating!!!!!!!!!

To resolve a lisping (speech) problem you need an assessment and appropriate treatment by a speech-language pathologist (speech-language therapist). The first step is an assessment. At the assessment the SLP tells you if your lisp can be treated, how, and how long it will take. Successful treatment is usual. You just have to take the plunge! Don't get bogged down on causes and theories - GET IT FIXED! Life's too short to put up with a sad sounding sssss :(

Hey guys
I'm 19, soon 20 and I've had a lisp for my entire life. I was never made fun of for it, and my friends were always standup about it, but just recently people have commented about it, 4 people to be exact. All were when I was on the phone, and well 3 of them were girls who I liked, and I was always very embarassed about it after they asked. One of them said my voice was, and I quote "kinda gay" which she said wasn't that big of a deal (though, it was kind of a turn off for ME that she thought my voice was gay) I have kind of the same problem as Rizer, I don't notice my lisp unless I hear it when recorded, honestly to me my voice sounds normal... unless it's played back to me. I really need help though, I'm wondering exactly where I'd be able to find a speech therapist? I'm not in a big town by all means, and I don't have medical insurance (+I'm going through college so moneys always tight) to pay for anything major so would it be costly? Is there no way I can solve this with, say an online course?

This is a very embarassing problem, since I don't want girls to be turned off cause of my voice or w/e. :

Posted by: entity on January 31, 2006 01:24 AM

Hi everyone, im sorry for being so angry/direct in my last response, I was just frustrated that there were so few sites that were about lisps, and how most of them were like this one and only contained experiences of people who lisp and no real solution. Anyway I apologize.

Anyway I found something from a forum that may help most us. Here are tips to produce the /s/ sound:

---------------------------

1) There are two possible tongue positions for good /s/ sounds. The one that works best, usually, is with the tongue tip slightly rounded (front sides up, front middle down) and the tip almost touching the space at the top of the upper front teeth. The sides of the tongue all the way back along the tongue touch the molars to seal off the air and prevent it from escaping anywhere besides between that rounded tongue tip and the upper teeth. There are some people who make good /s/ sounds with their tongue tip bunched down behind the bottom front teeth. The air then escapes between the upper front teeth and the middle of the tongue. Personally, I prefer the first tongue placement, though.

2) If a student has an interdental lisp then the tongue tip usually is not properly rounded and is not tense enough to stay in position; it slumps down so it's almost between the teeth, or sometimes even sticks out between the teeth.

3) SLPs work on a bunch of things--unique to each case--to get proper articulation going. Among them are jaw stabilization, awareness/self-monitoring of tongue position, and lots and lots of practice. You may or may not be able to do this yourself. It probably wouldn't hurt if you tried. But please recommend therapy to the student if that is at all possible.

---------------------------

I got this information from this forum:

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/teacher/viewtopic.php?t=4488

I hope this helped.

Goodluck to everyone in getting rid of your lisp. Remember, you can always go to a speech pathologist to help you get rid of it.

Hi I'm a 12 year old girl and I have a small lisp. I have went to a theripist for speech 1 time and I have been trying to get rid of my lisp by squishing marshmellows with my tongue ( theripist insists) and i don't think it's working. I do that everyday for 15 minutes and for I have been doing that for about 2 monthes. I hate my lisp and I hate the way my mom acts about it when I try to talk to her about it she starts to act like I am special needs or sometin. There is also a boy at school who has a huge problem with my lisp, but my friend has never noticed that I have a lisp. I hope to be a singer and I can sing great, but no hope of being famous with a lisp.
How can I get rid of it cause the marshmellows are really not workin?

Hello everyone, my name is Ethan. I'm sixteen years old, and have been living with a speech impediment now for I'd say at least eleven years. I don't know what to do. I had been in speech therapy from Kindergarden through third grade. It helped a little bit but I still cant pronounce any word with a "s" sound. Including words with c in it such as mice. I'm at my wits end. Every time I make a S sound I feel air being forced up through the roof of my mouth and out my nose. Is this common in normal speech or do I need surgery to correct it? Its bad enough being a little pudgey I dont need this anymore.

Sorry - here from Reddit.

http://members.tripod.com/Caroline_Bowen/lisping.htm is a great resource on lisps. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to train yourself not to lisp because there are multiple types of lisps.

For those who are younger and are hassled by your parents, tell them to take you to a speech pathologist - There are multiple possible causes. It might even be correctable by dentistry, as mentioned above.

Leave it alone. Everyone here seems to have created a cute little supportive community. It might not have been the original intent, but what resulted is cute and worthwhile...

While I feel the pain of the majority of posters, this Weblog entry is about a Programming Language called "LISP", not the speech disorder!

LISP stands for LISt Processor, a language that dates back to the 50s, and it's style of functional programming is very powerful, if not a lil esoteric at times.

I'm sure there are many forums on the web for Lisp Sufferers, so I wish you luck.

This place seems to have a forum for such issues

Hello, I have found many of the comments here very interesting. I can't figure out what the hell the link in the original article has to do with speach impediments though. Can anyone enlighten me?

Posted by: Andrew on February 25, 2006 11:41 PM

Indeed the comments are fascinating. It would seem like dyslexia and lisp go hand in hand... :)

I'm curious: How many lisp programmers have trouble pronoucing 's and 'z ?

Personally, I'm still learning lisp programming, and I've never had a lisp in my speech.

I'm fifteen and i have a lisp. I really want it gone. I avoid alot of s words but it can be pretty difficult sometimes. I remember when i was really young i used to take speech lessons but my parents stopped taking me. I'm scared to bring it up in front of my parents because i think they wwon't try to help. I would love to get surgery but i remember one time my parents knew a couple who had a kid with a lisp and they got surgery for him and my parents thought they were dumb for trying to change their own kid. It really sucks trying to read in front of the class and hearing people snicker and crap. And everytime i become friends with a girl (which isn't very often) they have to just come out and say they thought i was gay when we first met and crap like that. i think if i get some dentistry work doe it might help a bit. i think i'm going to talk to my mom about it. i'm so sick of being called a fag. this is the first time i've ever said anything ot anyone about it and thats probably not a good thing. my friends are pretty good about it and don't say anything. i've had one kid tell me i have a small lisp but i thnik he only said that cause he made fun of kid with a lisp, forgetting who he was talking to. I feel like such a fucking loser.

I'm 13 and i have a lisp i really didn't care to much that i had one cuz all my friends were cool about it. till today i was reading my report to the class and this kid screamed shut up ur lisp is soo annoying i was shocked and so embarasses i didn't know what to do i just stood up there i felt so numb with embarassment i ran home crying
i kept on saying to every one i hate myself i hate myself cuz i did i didn't know what to do i still don't i really don't want to go to school tomorrow but i have to i feel like such an idiot i wish i wasn't born with a lisp it's not like it was my fault i didn't chose to have a lisp i hear alot of people make fun of me for it not in front of me face but behind me back it bugs me alot but i ussually get over it i don't think i can get over what happened today though i don'y know how i should act tomorrow i really love to talk though. i really wish there was something to fix it i tried speech therapy and it didn't work that much i hate being made fun of something i can't fix! but oh well i guess i'm gonna have to live with it .... but does any one know anything that would help me? my "s" should like "th" and kinda "sh" sometimes i also can't say "Z" that well either but my therapist almost got that all fixed up i still need help !!!!!!!! plz any advice plz

I'm using two lisps: CMUCL (at home) and GNU/CLISP (at work). And I feel fine with it.

You shouldn't feel bad just for using a Lisp. Other people have it worse. Think of all the Java programmers and PHP users.

I have a lisp, and I always get made fun of for it, and I'm only thirteen.I can't say my name, because people can't understand me.I mumble, because it is so bad. It's so humiliating. My parents are used to it.So if I ask them to do something about it, they will say "Why? Nothing is wrong with you." I really want to atleast lessen it. But I don't know how. Can someone help me please???

Posted by: Sara on April 29, 2006 07:43 PM

Someone said above something like : hey people just get used to it. I have to disagree with this view because first of all not all lisps are the same. I am over 30 and have a lisp. it's extremely frustrating because all my life i've chosen the right words in order to cover up this embarassing thing. But i can't say my family name for example. I chose to do work where i do not have to speak. So i'm into computer graphics.
The reality is that i'd love to be a doctor and the only reason i didn't study medicine is because of my lisp. this changed my entire life.
I couldn'r bear the thought of people laughing at me, like they did all my life. So i buried myself and cut all my social activities.
I considered suicide many times and i don't think anyone should have to get used to something like this.

I see many people here with the same problem.
People asking for help.
is there really anyone who can help?

If so, please do. PLEASE help us!!

Posted by: morgan on May 3, 2006 10:04 AM

yep well i just learned to adjust it's hard but i figured if they don't like it they can get over it it's way embarassing i know but i hope no one let's it effect their life so badly there's almost nothingwe can do about we might as well live with it

I am a 32 year old female and I have had a lisp all my life. It has held me back in every sitiuation in life. My lisp is very noticeable and I still get teased when I talk. My 12 year old is starting to notice it also but he doesn't say too much about it. My huband seems like he never had a problem with it but now God has been dealing with me about speaking in front of people and being bold. He has given me many dreams of me preaching the gospel but many people do not see that happening because of my speech. Some people say that the annointing makes the difference. I do agree with that because I have stood before the congregation and read my poetry and have gotten great feed back and was told that the annointing was so great! It has help boost my self esteem. I went from being the shy tongue-tied little girl from the age of 5 years old, to a beautiful woman of god. They said I would't amount to anything but I made it this for by grace. Almost ended my life when I was 20 years old because of this abnormalty that really feels like my life was meaningless. I know now that I am somebody and I have a testimony. The dreams are from Christ my lord and savior and I even have doubts about preaching because how can they understand me? He has given me revelations after another and powerful messages but I have to wonder why would this be my calling if I can't speak well. Our thoughts are not like his thoughts, so all things are possible with god. I am looking to find a solution to my problem so that I can minister the word and stand up and be notice. I just want to tell everyone to be incourage because Jesus~He Will Fix It!

I am a college grad, and I am sick of dealing with a lisp because it effects my ability to communicate in a proffessional setting. I have learned to deal with it inorder to keep up my self-worth. I have a slight under-bite and that is the main cause of my lisp. Is there any treatment at home or any self-prescribed therapy that I can impliment on myself?

Posted by: Tim Bullock on June 6, 2006 12:48 PM

I can't stand hearing people with a lisp. I simply can't take them seriously. It amazes me how people can't learn how to properly make the "s" sound. I mean, I can get myself to speak as if I have a lisp; why can't people with a lisp speak as if they don't?

Posted by: on June 8, 2006 12:50 PM

Okay...I was just reading some of these comments and I came upon this one (the last one): "I can't stand hearing people with a lisp. I simply can't take them seriously. It amazes me how people can't learn how to properly make the "s" sound. I mean, I can get myself to speak as if I have a lisp; why can't people with a lisp speak as if they don't?" PEOPLE THAT HAVE A LISP WOULD CONTROL IT IF THEY COULD! I'm 16 and I have a slight lisp...basically it has to do with upper teeth not being fully aligned with the lower teeth...and when you say words containing "s" your tongue slips between the gap and you get the lisp effect...it's so annoying. It can be corrected by invisalign or braces...I wouldn't spend all that money to fix it though. People that really care about you and are your true friends shouldn't care if you have a lisp. (Besides, I'm sure if they make fun of you for it, there's something ten times worse with them that you can blackmail them with...) Haha...kidding. (Maybe!) I bet this has been oh so interesting...

PEOPLE WITH LISPS ROCKKK! (We're SSSSSpecial!)

Posted by: Sarah on June 8, 2006 03:05 PM

hi,
im 16, and ive had a lisp for as long as i can remember
my parents never told me, and i didnt really notice it til people at school pointed it out, because i always thought it was normal.
it wasnt really noticed til (british) highschool, because children in primary school sometimes lisp and its not noticed.

but recently its started getting me down.
im about to go to collage, and it adds to my paranoia of my slight dyslexia and ADD. my friends dont really notice it, but occaisionally tease me about it.

today though, a teacher seriously went too far and it hurt my feelings:
he was asking what form i was in
him: "11...?" (as in im in year 11)
me: "s"
him: "L?"
me: "no S"
him: "eth? sorry, we dont have a form eth in this school. or did you mean F? we dont have a form F either. or did you mean "eth" as in "thugar" ? hmmm?" -laugh-
me: -open mouthed shock-

i nearly felt like crying, or laughing in amazement, because youre not supposed to draw attention to things like that. you can think in your head, oh that person has a lisp, but you dont SAY haha you have a lisp.

it never really bothered me before.
but it made me think, "oh god people really do notice"
is it too layt to change it? ive tried practicing "saying" s. like keeping my tounge behind my teeth, but when i say "s" in a sentance, it takes about 3 seconds to get the sound right, waaay too much time.

sometimes its cute for girsl to lisp, but i dont like it. im 16, and i think i should have "grown out of it" by now, or at least managed it so its not very noticable.

i know this is about the lisp computer programming thingy, but the lisps have taken over so im commenting anyway.

Im 13..i never knew i had a lisp until the end of my 8th grade year..people would ask me about it and a few guys would taunt me..i also got stared at oddly..alot. Its not that bad..noone has problems understanding me. I have braces and for awhile i figured that was the main source of the lisp..but i asked the dentist and he said it shouldnt be. i still am alittle confused about what a lisp is..i cant get speech theropy cuz my mom insists i dont got a problem. It didnt used to bother me to much, except for the looks i get and just knowing ppl make fun of me behind my back. Now im completely self-conscience. its summer ; i havent gone anywhere since school let out..i havent talked on the phone..ive been completely avoiding any contact with ppl that could hear me..I cut myself..im depressed..and its driving me insane. Im thankful its not really bad.. but it still hurts so much.. if anyone could tell me something i could do at home, or if it is possible its just my braces..it would truly be a lifesavor..

yo.me and my sister have like slight lisps...she kinda whistles and mine isnt wicked strong....yeah they do suck...exspecially when youre 16 and 14...i honestly think the whole "trying not to say s" is like extremly bad. like just cause ONE LETTER sounds funny it doesnt matter tell people to fuk...basically just try practicing alone and keep on trying and it will sound better as u go on...thats what helps me the most!

hey can you read this?

Posted by: no one on August 4, 2006 09:25 AM

Hey. Ive Cured my Lisp! Im 16 and have had a terrible lisp all my life... and today when i came one this is site about 4hours ago, it was as bad as ever. After reading the comments i became determined to speak propperly. And here I am 4 hours later, and i know how to say S perfectly. Well i cant speak at a normal pace yet, and its more like 100x slower to get my tongue used to it. After reading this i first thought i had a large tongue... then i thought about surgery... then i just got frustrated and started beating my self up. But then i saw these forums with a bunch of speech professinals explaining how they cured childrens lisps. They sais that they started off with the "t" sound and told children to say it loadly and repeatdly. They then said they after a few goes, they were saying S without knowing. At this point, your probably thinking that there's no way that this will work. But believe me it will. And here's how you do it in my own words.
Say "ta" loudly and with alot of emphasis on the "t" sound. Then hold the "t" sound (so its not "ta ta ta ta".. but more like "ttttttttt") and i know your thinking its impossible to hold a "tttt" amd your right it is... but what you dont know is when you hold the "tttt" sound, after the first "ta", the rest is all the S sound. To me, i could here "ta" and i held it, and what followed was a whistle sound which sounded like air passing above my tongue. I thenn recorded my self saying my own name like that and played it. it was 100% perfect. All though to my own head it sounds like (if my name was nasa) "naa - whistle- aa".

GOOD LUCK!! ;)

I don't know what to look up for lisp surgery but if i was you i wouldn't get it. I don't want some dumb surgeon cutting me up because i can't speak right. I would try going to a speech therapist first then see what he recommends.

I'm so glad this blog is still in operation-
and that I've found so many teens like me who suffer from a lisp. I'm 15 and I love to sing and act, but it's so embarassing when I watch the tapes from our plays and concerts and I sound completley horrible. Normally I only have a slight lisp, but when I'm nervous it becomes worse. Also, I didn't suck on my thumb as a kid. I've been reading up on it and I know I had trouble with breathing through my nose as a kid- and so I think that accounts for some of it. I'm a very outgoing person so it wasn't hard for me to ask for help, but the problem was getting it. I spoke with my choral director and she gave me the name of a friend, so my mom and I went to the doctor for a referral, but because my father "didn't think I had a lisp" he wouldn't let me go. He thought I was just being dramatic and overly self concious. That wasn't the fact, but I didn't want to push it. So I asked the choral director to ask her friend to come to the school and give me lessons, but she never got around to it. Then, one of my best friend's mom is a certified speech therapist, and so I asked my friend if her mom could come help me. My friend came in the next day and told me that her mom had just said to keep my tongue behind my teeth. I felt like screaming- IF I COULD DO THAT, I WOULDN'T HAVE A LISP. It also didn't help that my perfect older sister had "worked through" hers, but apparently had no advice to give because she didn't remember taking care of it.
I could probably think of a million ways why I might have it but the important thing is I do and I want to get rid of it. I'm kind of against parents being so worried about their child lisping when they're 3-7 or 8, I mean they're just kids. But as they get older, what with being skinny, having perfect skin, etc. already being shoved on us, having a lisp just seems like an added disadvantage that we developed, and it's not fair.
Tonight I approached my dad and told him I had to have lessons and even though he accused me of being dramatic and being like a "frantic woman" he finally agreed and I'm going to have some lessons. Unfortunatley, it won't be in time for my play this weekend, "The Importance of Being Earnest" in which I'll be playing Miss Prism.
Maybe alot of you are here just looking for ways to get rid of your or someone else's lisp, but I myself am just so glad there are other people like me.

Hi, my name is John. I've had a lisp since I was 7. Right now I'm 11, and I've been talking with a lisp for 4 years. It really makes me feel bad. I can't even say my own name without a lisp! My friends don't make fun of me, but at times, people ask me about it. Only starting now, I've been trying to avoid words with sh,j,k and ch. Is it true that you can grow out of a lisp? Please help me. You know how it feels when someone makes fun of you.

Posted by: John on October 23, 2006 02:34 PM

Hi. I've only recently acknowledged my lisp, or to put it accurately, other people acknowledged it for me. I'm now almost constantly the subject of blatant and constant humiliation in school and have become wihdrawn and angry, more with my peers than my lisp. Unlike most, I don't wish to lose my lisp, as thats like showing people that you want to be the same as everyone else, and have given in to the pressure put on you to fix that which isn't broken. I've recently taken a slight interest interest in singing and acting, but can't see it going far due to my lisp, which I feel makes me sound unique, but would be ridiculed by others. So, should I just be patient with people and do as I wish and wait for them to accept that I'm not the same as them in such an image-concious society (I'm 13 in secondary school,) or are there any other ways I could handle it? Any suggestions can be sent to tomskews3@yahoo.co.uk . Thanks

Um. I had a lisp for a bit but never realised it until this random guy told me to say 'Sizzling Sausages' and I did and he and loads of people nearby started laughing at me.
And now I have a brace and I can't even talk. NO-ONE understands me. And I'm seeing my boyfriend in an hour. He won't want to talk to me or kiss me. I don't know what to do.
But I Just want to say thank you so much to everyone who has written here because it's kind of given me more hope that I'm not on my own here. Please email me or add to msn katie_loveluck@hotmail.co.uk just to talk because I want to hear from as many people as possible. Thank you.

i am 18 years old and, like most of you, i have a lisp. usually, i love having it. people think it's cute and funny; it's one of my features that people know me for. and i find myself almost flaunting it at times. i like having something different about me, something unconventional; i'm proud of it. but not always. like when i want to have a conversation with someone, but i know all they'll hear is 'thhh, tthhh, thhh' and think that i'm some kind of cartoon character. i don't want to seem goofy and flakey all the time, and whether it's wrong or right, many people will make judgements about me, like that i'm ditzy or unprofessional or stupid, based based soley on my lisp. i just hope my lisp doesn't prove to be a hinderance in my life, because it's part of who i am, and that's not something i'm willing to change.

My name is ian and i am 14 years old. I have a slight lisp and it came to my attention about a year and a half ago. Whenever spaeking in front of audiences or reading in front of class i am fine, but i only get a lisp when i am playing sports. I dont know why, but it just comes out with a long stressed S.When i pronounce my S's i put my tounge imbetween my top and bottom teeth on the righ side of my mouth, and it sounds fine...i think. Most of my friends dont say anything, but kids who i just metoccasionally do so. Mine is not major at all but i was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to correct a lisp when you are playin sports or excercising.

Hi I am 19 years old my confidence and self esteem is low. I think my lisp appeared when the dentist took one of my back teeth out 3-4 yr ago on the rightside of my mouth. I seem to drool alot on this side of my mouth and that seems to help me slur my words. If I suck up and talk slow I can talk normal, but this is hard work sucking up every 5-10 seconds to try and speak clear. Can anybody help? Email me: mufc_devil99@hotmail.com .. Thanks ;)

hi ivE had a lisp practically all of my life as long as me and any of my family can remember. Anyway im 14 had been wondering forever how i got my lisp and why i had it..so i finally decided to go onto google and type it in i found a few other good websites about it and after reading this one it has made me feel a bit better about it as i feel im the only one that has one even though im not !! . On the website i went on it told me that you can get lisps from either sucking your thumb or a dummy for a long period of time as a child and then trying to talk while it is stil in your mouth because it pushes the tongur back and causes a lisp...
its bad enough being a teenager but when ever you meet someone im always rele consious about it and try not to say words with s' in and if i accidently do i always get asked .." do you have a brace " and im like no just because i slurr it doesnt mean i have a brace and when people meansion about my lisp it makes me feel really insecure about it and about myself but theres nothing i can do about it
i went to speech therepy for about 7 years but left about five years ago as i thought i had improved but since then i have noticed it more than ever its only as ive got older that ive started to worry about it .. i dont get bullied because of it i jsut think people will judge me.. and when i go to meet boys or boyfriends i always feel like i never want to talk because they may not like me just because of my lisp..
i guess ive just got to live with it and at the end of the day it makes me indivual than most people and lots of people even love it and are for some reason jealous of me..
i just wondered if anyone had any tongue exercises they new that could help add me on msn if anyone wants littlemissflirty92@hotmail.co.uk thanks post your views on here..xxx

lol everyone who commented on here should make our own country where its OK to lisp and no one will make fun of us for having something that we can't control..maybe take over australia =)...

Posted by: link on January 30, 2007 06:09 PM

here is something i found on the internet about how to say S the "normal" way:
To make the /s/ sound you have to place your tongue on the roof of your mouth behind the top front teeth,on the little ridge there. The tongue must only lightly touch the roof of the mouth, and not rest firmly in the spot. Then you blow air over the top of the tongue, centering the air as it is blown. By rolling your tongue a little bit as the air goes out. The air must gently escape out the narrow space between the top front and bottom teeth. For the /z/ sound, you have to do all of the above and vibrate their vocal folds to produce sound.

Hey everyone!
All my life i have been a very outgoing person and very social. In 6th grade I discovered that i have a lisp.no matter how much i try i cant prononce my 's' right and its absolutley HUMILLIATING'.Im 14 yrs old and my self esteem has dropped tremendosly.People may say that a person with a lisp is stupid or iggnorant or a waste but its nothing that you can control.Im always finding a way to avoid s's and sometimes freak about the thought of having to give speeches or read out loud in school. It's very exhausting and embarrassing.Although i have many friends and dont get picked on very much,i always feel as if people dont like me as much as they would if i talked regularly. Its very reasuring to know that teens my age also feel this way and that there are teens with lisps.just remember guys that there will always be some confident snotty person who will pick on you about it but remember also that they have something too that they hate and are just picking on you for their own insecurities.i think that we can become stronger if we just forget about the one thing we hate the most and embrace it.Its very embarrasing and i do wish there was something i could do and who knows, maybe there will be someday.Yes there are surgeries and things that that but why change yourself to make others happy?I often wonder what its likejust being able to say what you want without having to analyze it. but whocares.just say it.If the rude people make fun of you, turn your head and laugh.Dont let them sense ur fear.i really hope that my thoughts help you.Remember that there are people in ur life who are so much about you with or without ur lisp.

I really hate my lisp. Im almost 13 years old, and i 've had it for as long as i can remember. I hate it so much. I can't pronounce my s sounds. But its not like 'sh' or anything else. It just kind of..odd..sounding at most. But when i was in third grade, some English speaking teacher was trying to help me get rid of it. But I was SO ashamed because i'm straight A student and I can't talk right. I hate it! So when she tried to help me, I felt stupid, and that's something I hate. So I guess i started to resent her, and ignore her help. Which wasn't a wise thing to do, now that i know i should've listened to her. But my sister hates it when i talk about me lisp for some reason. It pisses her really badly. And my parents are Asian, so i cant ask them because their English is broken sounding. But my sister is never going to help me. I want to get rid of it before high school. I hate being whispered about, or looked at weirdly when i have a presentation. Is it possible to even fix it?

I am 14 and recently noticed I have a lisp. I also mumble a lot at the end of sentences, and have a deep voice, even though I'm a girl. But no one has ever pointed the lisp out to me. So I asked my parents and they said, yes I do have one, because of hearing problems as a kid. But I love how I talk, no one else has the same one, and it is my own voice.

Hey Pam,
don't take your own life because people are bitches. I have a lisp too and i got made fun of it for so long then people just backed off. then this passed week people started making fun of me again. i just tell them to stop and walk away. you have to be strong and not listen to other people because it's just not right. please get some professional help if you're having thoughts about suicide. psychiatrists are great, i had suicide problems and now once i get out of high school i want to be a psychiatrist.
some other advice: get a pet. [[pref. a dog]] they're great and don't judge you for anything. they get used to the way you talk and they don't know any different.

Pam, please, see a professional.

i know how everyone here feels but the only way to get rid of a lisp is to go to a speech therapist even if your really embraessed telling your parents. I tried looking for an answer for 4 years online and it didnt work. I tried everything from watching people's mouth as they talk and avoiding s words. i finally got so fruastrated that i broke down crying in front of my mom and she brought me to a speech therapist that helped me be cured!I wished i went sooner so that i could have enjoyed going to school but i guess eventually is better then never. heres the website i used that helped me find a speech therapist in my area.

I have a lisp but im not sure which sort i have. I actually don't know how the "proper" way to say the letter S is. I try to put my toungue lightly on the roof of my mouth and guide airflow through my top and bottom teeth. But when i listen to the recording carefully, it still sounds as if its a "th" sound, only with certain words. I try an avoid using the letter S even around family and friends. I love singing and talking so this is really holding me back, im getting depressed over it, and i just cry everytime i hear what ive recording because my voice isnt "normal" I really need your help, or if ANYONE knows, please help! I cant go to a speech therapist as im not confident enough to go, and also everyone would know i have a lisp then, plus there isnt one in my area =(

Hi! I really need to get rid of my lisp. People are always asking me why i talk weird. Once on vacation this summer, these guys said that i sounded like the gopher on whinne the pooh. Its really holding back my confidence and my personality. I am so embarressed. I try not to talk anymore and sometimes avoid "s" words.Does anyone know any exercises to get rid of a lisp ? I have an oddly large, long tongue. I heard that may have something to do with it. I think i have what is called a lateral lisp. Well... if anyone can help, email me at awsumchick07@yahoo.com thanks so much :)

Hey, I would just like to say, i have a lisp and it doesnt bother me at all, people do comment and assume im gay, but i know im not so thats all that matters, i have read many of the posts on this site and everyone is saying that they would love to get rid of it as they really hate it, i used to be like that but then i noticed it , it makes you different and well, more interesting. I have also noticed that people say that they would like to do certain jobs and hobbies like Drama and things that generrally envolve talking, There is nothing to stop you from getting thoose jobs, i used to think there was, but i now have a job at my local radio station, and yeah i do get emails from people saying that i have a really bad lisp, but i also get emails from alot of girls ;-) saying they like it and its "cute", so just because you hjave a lisp, it doesnt mean that you have to be locked out from scociety, just agree with people that comment "yeah it sucks"lol thatl shut em up.
sorry its so long i couldnt stop typing

I really need to get ride of it and I'd do anything for help.

Hey. I have a lisp. I didnt find out i had one until this year when my friends at my new school pointed it out. They tease me about it sometimes and I hate it. I can't notice my lisp but everyone else can. I love music and I play guitar and sing. Everyone says I'm a great singer, but I would be better without a lisp. I really want to get rid of it. Please help!
Thanks
Good luck to everyone

hi, i have a lisp and i'm just wondering how i can cure it, i've had it for a while and i wana get rid of it

Posted by: Andrew on September 26, 2007 10:24 PM

I am so upset about my lisp! It was increbly strong, no one knew what i was saying for the longest time when i was in grade 1 and 2. I did 4 years of speach classes 3-4 times a week. People made fun of me when i was 6 and now i'm 13. Ive always hated it and try to stay away from S, SH, CH, G, J...I can't say my own name properly. I always have to repeat it 2-3 times! It doesn't bug me too much but it really hurts me when people make fun...I was born with it!

I really got upset today and i cried. This guy i've been going to school with since i was 6...he was the kid who made fun of me, and the reason i went to a phyciatrist for 2 years. For the whole day today, he talked loudly with a lisp and i was beat red the whole day. At lunch, he was being horrible to me and being like "Now i have a lissthp too" I lost it and punched him in the face. I gave him a bleeding nose.

I know my lisp isn't that bad. My voice is completely normal sounding except for it! I am so hurt by it. I'm even hurt by the fact i have it, i'm hurt by the fact that the redicule put me into therapy! I'm hurt because no one in my school out of 450 kids has a lisp! I'm so hurt by it. No one can understand how i feel but the people who have posted here with the same problem.

Theres always that one person who can never let it go that you have a speech impedament. All day he followed me talking in a lisp and i was so red that a few people were like "What the hell happened to you?" so i just lost it on him and gave him a bleeding nose. And I was about to punch him again but my friends held me back. It's not even that hes purposly hurting my feelings! It's that he does it infront of everybody, then people think it's okay and join in.

and I also know this. Many boys think i am really cute and i know about 3 who like me but they've all told my friends that they are turned off by my lisp. It completely effects my social life. I always have to repeat things! I'm so incredibly upset. I am really smart, i always get the highest on final exams and i get a 100% on almost everything. All my teachers have a first impression that i'm stupid because of it. I can't handle it anymore. Therapy will take way too long. I need something, anything. I don't care about pain of surgery or anything, i just need it gone fast!

HI

I AM 27 YEARS OLD GUY AND I ALWAYS HAD A LISP BUT NO ONE EVER POINT IT OUT TO ME, NOT SCHOOL TEACHERS OR PARENTS, I ALWAYS BEEN MADE FUN OFF, LAUGHED AT BY PEOPLE CLOSEST TO ME - TO A EXTENT I CAN IMAGINE WHY THEY FIND IT FUNNY BUT ITS NOT FUNNY WHEN YOUR THE REASON BEHIND IT - IS THERE A OPERATION FOR IT? I REALLY CANT TAKE THIS PROBLEM ANY MORE, I AM GENERALLY A CHATTY PERSON AND HAVE A OK SOCIAL LIFE, BUT RECENTLY MY CONFIDENCE HAS HIT ROCK BOTTOM, AND ITS MAKING ME SO DEPRESSED, PLEASE HELP!!

LISP IS NOT A PERSONAL IMPAIRMENT. It is a programming language:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisp_programming_language

Now, learn LISP, get surgery, or live with it.

Hey im not going to tell you my name becuse it is VERY rare, i have a lisp too, i am 12 years old, its really embarrasing, and i wanna be an actress, so thts even harder, i cant be an actress if i have a speech problem, right?
i hate it, i wish my teachers cud have put me in speech classes at ym elementary, then maybe i wudnt still have it, i cry all the time and its really hard, i hate talking over the phone and i hate talking to new people, but i do becauze im very outgoing and very talkitive, my friends never make fun of me or anything no one does, my friend ally did tell me one time tht we were talking about voices, tht i kinda have a lisp [whihc i already knew and didnt wanna hear] but other than tht i have a really pretty voice, i want more than anything to lose it, im soo ashamed of myself nd embarrased, i feel like my family and theyre friend and mine are sometimes too, i know they're not tho, i had never met or heard of anyone else having a lisp, until now, and its really a relief to know tht there are girls my age who have a lisp too, im a cheerleader also, and tht can be uncomfortable and really embarrasing sometimes calling out cheers and introducing myself although my name doesnt have an S in it first or last, i really want to lose it, PLEASE HELP, are there any speech therapists or teachers or some kind of class i cud take to get rid of it?
another thing, ive been trying for a year to lose it by not putting ym tongue between my teeth pronounving the "th" sounds, or THound, to me whenever i speak it sounds like im prounouncing my S perfectly because i learned not to put my tongie bwteeen my teeth but apparently i still lisp, and tht doesnt make sense to me, i think about probably 13 hours of the day, NO JOKE, i think before i prounounce any S word, and try to say it right but i guess it doesnt work, im tired of living wiht this embarrasment EVERY DAY of my life, i wasnt even aware i had a lisp until last year in the sixth grade i didnt know tht it meant you prounounced S like, TH until a few months ago, thts when i REALLY became ashamed and embarrased about it,i can say the SH sound and i think Z but not S, why did this happen to me? i wonder every day, i hear other people on TV shows speking and my friends, and get really JEALOUS tht they can pronounce S and i cant, is there any way i could lose it? SOMEONE PLEASE TEL ME.

folks, just take speech therapy. the internet can't solve all your problems and this site is about a PROGRAMMING language, not the unskilled use of your tongue.

Posted by: Chris on March 27, 2008 06:08 AM

the best thing you can do is talk to someone (preferably your parents) about it and to find a speech therapist...s is pronounced by curling the sides of your tongue up to the insides of your upper molars so that all of the air stays above your tongue and is centralized...then the tip of the tongue is kind of curled/pointed to a spot right between the front two teeth and the roof of your mouth but is not touching anything...you're not going to be able to do it overnight and it's much harder to do in conversation, it could take up to a year to fix, so just keep at it and don't give up

hope that helps

hey everyone, i am 15, and i also have a lisp, it is not very bad but i dont like to talk in class because of it. i love music and i love to sing, and when i sing you cant really notice it, but i have to try really hard to make my singing sound right. like some of you my friends dont bother me about it, but it bothers me, i have a very deep voice and that doesnt help anything. i wish i could meet some of you people, i might know 3 people in my school who have this problem, and all of them are guys, i have never meet a girl with this problem, and to see that girls do have it, it helps alot, im going to try lipogram and maby it will help me, i have had no classes for my lisp, and i want to, mostly just to meet other people with the problem, im not a bad looking guy, but its hard to talk to girls, knowing that they can notice my lisp.

I hope that everyone here gets their problem taken care of, cause i know how bad it can be. thank you for reading, sometimes just knowing that your not alone can help everything :)
