MCL Going Open Source

Alice Hartley from Digitool:

MCL 5.2 will soon be released as on open source project. It is Unicode based. It is PPC only. Perhaps this release will enable some combination of financial and engingeering resources to provide an Intel implementation.

Not sure what that means for Digitool.

Yipee!!! This is probably MCL's best hope to get an Intel port.

The latest item on digitool.com's "what's new" page is over 2 years old. Was there any reason to believe Digitool is anything but "quite dead"?

It's neat that we'll have more free Lisp code, but as a practical matter I'm not sure what this gives us that the other free Lisp compilers don't already have -- including OpenMCL.
